Our managing director, Paul Smith, took the reins of the popular 50 Shades of Planning podcast to host a special episode exploring how the planning system operates in the USA, and what lessons we can learn for the English system.

In the episode, guest Emily Hamilton, Senior Research Fellow and Director of the Urbanity Project at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, answered Paul's questions about how America's zonal planning system really works. The wide-ranging discussion covered the roles of federal, state and city governments, how different approaches to zoning can produce different outcomes, and what that variation can tell us about the impact of planning restrictions on housing supply and prices.

The first in a new "All Around the World" series of episodes, over the coming months Paul will be recording more conversations with planning experts from overseas in a search for ideas to improve the English system.
