August 2021 saw a new Permitted Development Right come into force allowing buildings for many uses associated with our high streets - like shops, restaurants, cafes and banks - to be converted into new homes without the need for planning permission.

Critics of the change claim it will harm our town and city centres and result in poor quality homes in the wrong locations. The reality, though, is much different.

In his latest piece for Housing Today, our managing director, Paul Smith, explains why the new rules can result in towns and cities which are more vibrant, more sustainable.
